I’ve had plenty of lawyers tell me that being a caring lawyer is not important. That can’t be true because there are a set of rules that lawyers must follow to take “Care” of their clients called “Conduct and Client Care Rules”
Under these rules whenever I provide legal services as a lawyer, I must:
- Act competently, in a timely way, and in accordance with any arrangements made.
- Protect and promote my clients interests and act for them free from compromising influences or loyalties.
- Discuss with my client their objectives and how they should best be achieved.
- Provide my client with information about the work to be done, who will do it and the way the services will be provided.
- Charge my client a fee that is fair and reasonable and let them know when they will be billed.
- Give my client clear information and advice.
- Protect my client’s privacy and ensure appropriate confidentiality.
- Treat my client fairly, respectfully and without discrimination.
- Keep my client informed about the work being done and advise them when it is completed.
- Let my client know how to make a complaint and deal with any complaint promptly and fairly.
As you can see, being a caring lawyer is a requirement but that’s not the only reason why I care. I care because I’m a human being who knows what it’s like to cross difficult times. By caring for my clients they get great results and the support they need.
